Why Pet Urine Is Uniquely Challenging
Pet urine presents a two-part problem: the stain and the odor. Unlike many carpet stains, urine contains uric acid crystals that, once dried, don't fully dissolve in plain water. This is why carpets that smell fine when dry can suddenly smell strongly of urine when humidity rises — the crystals reactivate with moisture. Treating only the surface is not enough; you need to reach the uric acid to permanently eliminate the odor.
Step 1: Address Fresh Urine Immediately
Speed is everything. The faster you act, the less urine penetrates into the carpet backing and pad beneath.
- Use paper towels or an absorbent cloth to blot up as much urine as possible. Press firmly — don't rub.
- If you have an old towel, place it over the area and stand on it for 30–60 seconds to maximize absorption.
- Rinse the area with a small amount of cold water, then blot again.
- Repeat until no more yellow color transfers to your cloth.
Step 2: Apply an Enzyme Cleaner

- Saturate the affected area generously — the cleaner needs to penetrate as deep as the urine did.
- Let it dwell for the time stated on the label (usually 10–15 minutes minimum; some recommend up to an hour for severe cases).
- Blot up excess moisture. Do not rinse — this would dilute the enzymes.
- Cover the area with a damp cloth and let it work overnight for best results.
Important: Do not use enzyme cleaners alongside other cleaning products. Chemicals like bleach, ammonia, or strong detergents can deactivate the enzymes and neutralize their effectiveness.
Step 3: Neutralize Remaining Odor
After the enzyme cleaner has done its work and the area has dried, apply baking soda to neutralize any residual odor molecules:

Finding Hidden Urine Stains
